Have you ever tried buying toothpaste without plastic packaging in the store? Impossible, right?
Even health food stores only carry “all-natural” kinds of toothpaste packaged in plastic. Fortunately, the online marketplace offers a variety of plastic-free alternatives to the brick and mortar version of toothpaste.
My personal favorite plastic-free toothpaste: The dirt all-natural tooth powder mason jar
Toothpaste Without Plastic Packaging
Toothpaste without plastic packaging is not only just as good as its plastic-wrapped counterparts, most likely it’s even better with all-natural ingredients rooted in humanity’s traditional methods for cleaning our teeth.
From powders to tablets to pastes like our modern world has grown to expect, green consumers have a variety of options for a plastic-free toothpaste.

6 substitutes for toothpaste without plastic packaging
Whether you dip your toothbrush into a jar of powder or you pre-chew a tablet for brushing, you have a world of selections from the toothpaste without plastic packaging display.
1: The Dirt All Natural Tooth Powders
Super Mint, Six Month Supply 51g
The Dirt’s tooth powder mason jar 6 month supply is the plastic-free, eco-friendly version of its product for the green consumer (the Dirt also offers a 3 month supply in a plastic tub).
In both a «Sweet Spice» and «Super Mint» flavor, the all-natural tooth powder, a bentonite clay-based tooth powder, is softer than the enamel on your teeth, preventing scratching – even on sensitive teeth. In addition to the bentonite clay, the toothpowder consists of baking soda to help whiten your teeth, green tree and wasabi extracts, hexane-free stevia, and a blend of mint essential oil that fights gum disease freshens your breath and is antimicrobial.
Nearly all of the customer reviews are positive. Customers love the taste of the Dirt’s tooth powder. Those with sensitive teeth said the toothpowder is not too harsh. And those who were looking to whiten their teeth said the tooth powder worked wonders. Read more reviews about mason jar
2: TAYLOR’S TOOTH Powder
Natural with Xylitol & Activated Charcoal *MINT*
Taylor’s tooth powder is packaged in a glass jar with a metal lid. With charcoal for natural tooth whitening and a blend of herbs for cleaning, as well as for healing, Taylor’s tooth powder, the toothpaste without plastic packaging, is also vegan and 100% natural.
Providing mostly positive reviews, customers wrote they liked how clean their teeth and mouth felt after brushing. One customer specifically chose Taylor’s tooth powder to avoid using plastic after she had been chewing xylitol, an ingredient found in Taylor’s, along with brushing with baking soda. 3: Chewtab Toothpaste Tablets
Peppermint, Zero Waste Refill
Chewtab’s toothpaste tablets are another alternative toothpaste without plastic packaging. Not only does Chewtab not use plastic packaging, but their packaging is made from compostable plant material. SLS-free and fluoride-free, Chewtab’s tablets contain 100% natural xylitol in peppermint, cinnamon, and vanilla-mint flavor. Pop a tablet in your mouth, chew until you reach a fine consistency, and then brush.
Reviews are mostly positive for Chewtabs (apparently a counterfeit Amazon seller was using Chewtab’s listing to sell a counterfeit version accounting for a few negative reviews). Customers wrote their mouths felt fresh and clean, and they enjoyed the portability of the chew tabs. Read reviews about Chewtab’s toothpaste tablets.
4: Davids Natural Charcoal Toothpaste
Peppermint, Whitening, Antiplaque, Fluoride Free, SLS Free
Davids toothpaste is not only packaged in a recyclable metal tube, but it also includes a tube roller/squeezer to spare your fingers! A vegan product, both fluoride- and SLS-free, Davids toothpaste contains xylitol for healthy gums. The charcoal whitens teeth naturally, safely, and effectively. Comprised of naturally sourced ingredients, Davids toothpaste without plastic packaging is clean and safe, rated “1” – the highest rating by the Environmental Working Group.
All but one customer gave Davids toothpaste five stars, and even the two-star reviewer admitted she liked the tube roller. The rest of the reviewers wrote their mouths felt clean and fresh, and a couple of customers posted photos of their teeth to show the whitening effect of the charcoal. 5: Green Root’s Activated Charcoal powder
Activated Coconut Charcoal Powder W/ 100% Natural & Magical Teeth Whitening Formula
Packaged in aluminum, Green Root’s Activated Charcoal powder is a plastic-free and 100% organic teeth whitening powder. While Green Root suggests using this product with your regular toothpaste, it also states it’s a new way to clean your mouth.
While most customers did write that they noticed their teeth growing whiter with this product, many complained it is a messy product on the sink, as well as on clothing. See more reviews about green root’s activated charcoal
6: Georganics Natural Toothpaste
– English Peppermint – Organic Coconut Oil Toothpaste
Zero waste toothpaste, Georganics is packaged in a glass jar with a metal lid. While the coconut oil kills the bad bacteria, which can lead to bad breath, teeth discoloration, sensitive teeth, and erosion of teeth enamel, the sodium bicarbonate works as a disinfectant and antibacterial, reducing acid-loving bacteria, as well as alkalizing your mouth.
With only five reviews on Amazon, we can still see that most of the customers love the product. Only one customer gave four stars because Georganics increased the sensitivity in her already sensitive teeth. Read reviews about Georganics
My favorite plastic-free toothpaste:
Because all of these products are popular among customers, I have to choose the plastic-free toothpaste with the most reviews by far: The dirt all-natural tooth powder with a whopping 2000+ reviews and an average of 4.3 stars on Amazon.
The Dirt’s toothpaste without plastic packaging is only available as plastic-free in the six-month-supply, 51 gram, mason jar option. If given enough time, the other products will most likely reach these numbers, but in the meantime, I would go with the consistent and time-tested Dirt All Natural Tooth Powder.
And remember, all of these plastic-free toothpaste products are made up of a few simple ingredients available to the general public. If you would like to make your own toothpaste at home, please see the directions in the following link: A dentist-approved homemade toothpaste recipe!
